5 Things Counselling is not!

🌿 5 Things Counselling Is Not!

When people first think of counselling, all sorts of images pop into mind. For some, it’s lying on a big leather chair while a silent therapist nods seriously. For others, it’s being told what to do, judged, or analysed like a case study.

The truth is — counselling today looks nothing like those outdated stereotypes. Let’s bust a few myths together…

1. Absolutely no chaise lounge!

Let’s clear this one up straight away. You won’t be asked to lie down on a velvet chaise lounge while I sit behind you scribbling notes. Most sessions happen sitting in a normal chair (or even online, in the comfort of your own home). It’s a conversation, not a scene from an old movie.

2. It’s not about being judged

Some people worry a counsellor will sit in silence, frown, and decide whether you’re “coping well enough.” That couldn’t be further from the truth. Counselling is a safe, confidential space where you can say what’s really on your mind — without anyone telling you it’s silly, selfish, or wrong and absolutely no judgements.

3. It’s not advice-giving

This surprises a lot of people! Counselling isn’t about me telling you what to do. Instead, it’s about working together so you can explore your feelings, choices, and what feels right for you. My job isn’t to wave a magic wand and hand you answers — it’s to help you find your own.

4. It’s not just for “serious” problems

A common stigma is that you only “need” counselling if you’re at rock bottom. In reality, many people use counselling as a way to understand themselves better, to talk through stress, or to cope with life changes like bereavement, illness, or caring for a loved one. If something feels heavy, counselling can help lighten the load — whatever the scale.

5. It’s not forever

Counselling isn’t a life sentence. For some people, a few sessions are enough to work through a particular issue. Others choose longer-term support. You set the pace, and you decide when you’ve got what you need.

🌱 Final Thought

Counselling is not about lying on a chaise lounge, being judged, or being told what to do. It’s about having a safe, supportive space to talk — and to be heard.

If you’ve been putting off counselling because of old myths or worries, maybe it’s time to give it a try.
